START-UP NY has facilitated a mutually beneficial business relationship between Bak USA and the University at Buffalo.
Bak USA’s partnership with the University at Buffalo is turning over a new leaf of excellence. What does that mean? The bond between our social enterprise and the university continues to grow, and together we’re making a meaningful impact on the local economy.
“Through START-UP NY and the University at Buffalo,” explains Bak USA President Ulla Bak, “we’ve been able to to start our business in Buffalo, consult with tech experts from the university, and provide internship and job opportunities to UB grads. The relationship is only growing stronger.”
“We have found that the University at Buffalo is preparing the next great minds for a wonderful future, and we’re then giving them the platform to succeed.”
Over the past few months or so, Bak USA has seen our workforce expand from 50 employees to nearly 70 with no expectation to halt hiring efforts. We expect to exceed 100 employees as we expand our office space throughout 2017.
“Talent is needed in every department,” says Bak USA Chief People Officer Eva Bak. “We’re seeking people who are extremely skilled in their craft, embody the socially inclusive philosophy we celebrate, and demonstrate high emotional intelligence. UB has certainly provided us with such individuals.”
“Eleven of our employees—myself included!—have studied at UB,” Ulla adds. “We have found that the University at Buffalo is preparing the next great minds for a wonderful future, and we’re then giving them the platform to succeed.”
The relationship between both companies is mutually beneficial. “We are thrilled to have Bak as a partner,” says Christina Orsi, UB’s associate vice president for economic development. “They are a model for how START-UP NY can attract companies to locate in New York State and engage with UB.”

In what ways, exactly, has Bak USA given back to UB? “Bak is providing intern opportunities for students, hiring graduates, [collaborating with our faculty], and they have served as guest speakers at several UB events. We look forward to our continued partnership and Bak’s growth in Buffalo.”
With a mission to invigorate a new era of American manufacturing in major urban areas across the United States, Bak USA hopes to recreate similar relationships with other colleges and universities from coast to coast.
