FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
BUFFALO, New York—January 10, 2018—Bak USA, a social enterprise that builds mobile computers in downtown Buffalo, today announced that it has surpassed the 100-employee milestone less than three years after opening its doors.
“This is a major accomplishment,” said Eva Bak, the vice president of people at Bak USA. “The fact that we are now more than 100 employees strong is a testament not only to the success of our business model but to the strength of our corporate culture.”
The announcement marks Bak USA as a symbol of the potential for technology companies to thrive in the Buffalo Niagara region.
“Buffalo is a wonderful place to launch and grow a business,” said Ulla Bak, the president of Bak USA. “The community welcomed us warmly and we’ve enjoyed strong support from the moment we opened our doors.”
“I’d like to congratulate Eva and Ulla Bak for not only reaching, but going beyond their goal of hiring 100 employees at their Buffalo-based global headquarters,” said Mayor Byron W. Brown. “Bak USA has contributed tremendously to the growth of Buffalo’s workforce and skyline. We are so happy that they are headquartered in Buffalo and are proud to be their home.”
In early January, Bak USA hired a group of four production technicians—Younis Ali, Damaris Caceres, Madelyn Montes, and Carla Rose—and pushed the company past the 100-employee milestone. The production technicians, who are from Iraq, Buffalo, New York, Puerto Rico, and Brooklyn, New York, respectively, build rugged Seal tablets and Atlas 2-in-1 laptops in the company’s production facility in the Compass East building on Michigan Avenue in downtown Buffalo.
“Working at Bak USA has been a really rewarding experience,” said Ali, who has worked with the company since early December. “I’m studying technology at college, so this is a perfect fit for me. Working here doesn’t feel like work. It’s a fun community and I’ve learned something new every day. I don’t feel like it’s just a job. It’s something more.”
Today, Bak USA’s employees represent 14 different nationalities and speak more than 25 different languages.
“Our team includes more than 100 people from all over the world who represent many different cultures,” Eva Bak said. “We’ve created a very close-knit group of people who treat one another like family. I think that’s incredibly powerful, especially when you look at everything happening in the world.”
As a social enterprise, much of Bak USA’s corporate responsibility efforts focus on creating job opportunities for those who are often underrepresented in the workforce and in the technology industry.
“We choose to do things differently,” Eva Bak said. “We believe that hiring is not about keeping people out. It’s about bringing people in. The qualities we’re looking for aren’t necessarily on a resume.”
The company’s first employee, Bilel Neji, PhD, the director of engineering, as well as its first group of technicians—Lysmary Santiago, Lawrence Smith, and Salah Macheremo—all work at Bak USA today. Santiago, Smith, and Macheremo were each hired as product builders and have grown their careers while at Bak USA. Santiago is now an administrative assistant, Smith is the company’s warehouse specialist, and Macheremo is an electronics technician.
“One of the most important things to me is the bond I have with Ulla and J.P. Bak, our president and CEO,” said Smith. “I’ve worked at several different places, but I’ve never been able to say that about a company’s leadership. If you were to ask me what has kept me here since the beginning, I would say it’s the atmosphere and the relationships I have with my coworkers. It’s like a second family.”
Bak USA opened its doors on January 15, 2015 and its first three years in business have been marked by several milestones. In 2017 alone, the company launched new models of its Atlas 2-in-1 laptop and rugged Seal tablet. It also announced a major retail partnership with Microsoft, introduced a rugged tablet with Verizon 4G LTE capabilities, and received a $10 million investment from local investor B. Thomas Golisano.
“Surpassing the 100-employee mark is a significant milestone for any company,” said Eva Bak. “We’re grateful that so many talented and passionate people have chosen to be part of our journey. As we prepare to launch our fourth year in business, it’s safe to say our future looks very bright.”
